Grandmaster reflects on FIDE motto 'We are one family'

Grandmaster Aarav Dengla reflects on the FIDE motto 'Gens Una Sumus' (Latin for 'We are one family') in his debut column for The Times of India.

The phrase originates from Roman poet Claudian and was adopted by FIDE, the international chess federation, as its motto.

Aarav first noticed the three words beneath the FIDE emblem as a seven-year-old entering his first international tournament.

He believes the motto reflects chess's unique community where players of all ages and countries compete on equal terms without expensive equipment.

Aarav recalls his mother explaining the meaning after his first game, and the words have stayed with him at tournaments worldwide.
